SERIOUS GAME DESIGN
COMMUNITY BUILDINGMARCH ‘22- APRIL ‘22
A conversational card game to help build community among queer chinese men.
As a part of our serious game design course, we were given the task to build a serious game on topics that matter to us the most- we chose the process of building trust and commmunity among chinese gay men.

I was a part of a group of three, with Yikun Wang & Effy Tam- fellow designers in my course. one of them who identifies as part of the community we were designing the game for.
This course incorporates game theory and analysis with hands-on development of social impact games: interactive experiences that integrate socio-political events, values and messages into their design and game mechanics. Working in teams, students take on game projects from concept to a functional prototype, and refine their projects through several iterations, ending with a game festival with a jury of experts.

The Challenge:
In the complex landscape of queer identities within Asian communities, finding a sense of belonging can be a daunting challenge. Legal restrictions and societal stigmatization exacerbate the struggle for queer individuals, particularly in regions like China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore. Recognizing the profound impact of these challenges, our team embarked on a mission to cultivate a nurturing space where queer Asian men could authentically connect, share their stories, and foster a sense of community.

At the heart of our endeavor lay the principles of design thinking and rapid prototyping, infused with a deep sense of empathy and compassion. We understood that each individual carries a unique narrative, shaped by personal experiences, cultural influences, and societal pressures. Our goal was to ensure that these stories were not only heard but celebrated within the fabric of our creation.

With a meticulous approach, we identified the foundational elements essential for crafting a compelling experience: characters, plot, and events. For our game, we honed in on the intrinsic metrics crucial to the lived experiences of queer Asian men—attributes such as independence, education level, mental health, familial relationships, and intimacy.
Through character cards, players were empowered to allocate points, crafting personas that mirrored their authentic selves, with a total sum of 15 points distributed among these traits.

Beyond mere gameplay mechanics, we delved into the realm of meaningful engagement and introspection.
Question cards became our conduit for self-discovery, meticulously curated to traverse the progressive stages of embracing one's identity. From questioning selfhood to navigating the intricacies of coming out and beyond, each question card served as a beacon of empathy, drawing from real-life experiences shared through interviews and community outreach efforts.
Questioning your identity, understanding your attitude towards coming out, questions about the coming out process, and life after coming out. Each question card answered would add to the qualities of the character. We collected these questions through interviews with members of the community and online forms.
Through this process, we aimed to create a game that not only builds community but also helps individuals embrace their authentic selves by understanding and accepting their unique stories.

Our commitment to authenticity extended beyond individual narratives; it encompassed the broader societal context that shapes queer identities. Event cards, reflective of real-world occurrences like social media bans and website shutdowns targeting the community, added a layer of realism, challenging players to navigate adversity while bolstering resilience and solidarity within the game.

The gameplay is centered around building meaningful connections and embracing one's authentic self. There is no winner or loser in this game; instead, each player draws a character card with four stats that they must fill in. The goal is to bring your true self into the character you create and acquire additional points to help your character live the life you think is ideal.

To gain points, players must move past small talk and engage in deeper conversations. In each round, a player chooses a card from one of the question stacks and asks the group the question.

Everyone gives their answer, but the card is awarded to the person who gave the "best" answer. The player who receives the card increases their ability stats by one point. The first person to reach a total of 15 points wins.
Overall, the gameplay is designed to encourage players to explore their true selves and build connections with others in the queer Asian community. The game provides a safe and supportive environment to have meaningful conversations and gain valuable insights

	Final Prototype:

We decided to structure the conversation by introducing roles into the conversation. Each round had a mover, an advocate, an explorer that offers a different perspective, and an observer that notices themes and emotions.
The Mover picks up and answers the question.
After the round, people award their point to their player of choice.

We added Opportunity cards thay involved tasks that went beyond the game as a way of sustaining the community being formed- like introducing them to their favourite inclusive hangout spot. Opportunity cards can only be picked up after you have reached your desired goal in atleast one character trait.

	Menstrual Recycle
RESEARCH COMMUNITY BUILDING
PERSONAL PROJECT
A personal project that aimed at creating a community which helps young urban South Asian women navigate their path to having a more sustainable period & fosters knowledge sharing.

The Challenge:
Every year India produces about 12.3 billion tonnes of sanitary waste, most of which either ends up in landfill or later incerated. This adds to the already problematic waste management system.
Upto 52% women in urban India use sanitary napkins. Most of them are unaware of how harmful they can be, not only for the enviornment but also fo rtheir own body. I remember the time one of my undergrad friend told me that it takes upto 500-800 years for one sanitary napkin to biodegrade. I felt so cheated. I was producing an immense amount of waste every month for something I couldn’t even help.Pharma companies do a great job of hiding these facts and brand their “sanitary” products as clean, safe and non toxic when in fact, they are anything but. Navigating the vast expanse of information available on the internet can be overwhelming and confusing for users, leaving them uncertain about where to start and whom to trust. Furthermore, making significant lifestyle changes can be an intimidating process, particularly when undertaken alone.

Understanding underlying stigma
Recognizing the deep-rooted stigma surrounding menstruation in India, including the reluctance to embrace new menstrual practices due to concerns about hymen intactness, which is often associated with notions of virginity. This cultural perception acts as a deterrent for women considering the use of menstrual cups or tampons. This insight emerged through direct interactions with community members, shedding light on their apprehensions.

Exploring & Understanding Experiences

Delving into personal experiences, it became evident that many women were unaware of the detrimental impact their conventional sanitary products had on both the environment and their health. Even after realizing the drawbacks, some felt helpless due to a lack of knowledge on how to proceed or were fearful of adopting a new product.
User personas made after initial primary research

These were collected over an online instagram story to gather

My goals for the project were as follows:
To create more cognizance amongst the urban menstruating population in India who still used sanitary napkins.
To build a community of trust and safety for people to help find their own path to sustainable and healthy menstruation. In the face of daunting processes, it's natural to feel demotivated. That's why personal support and guidance become paramount in these transformative journeys. I am passionate about fostering a community that extends a helping hand tailored to individual experiences and the unique challenges encountered when embracing sustainable alternatives. Creating a safe haven where concerns can be freely expressed is an integral part of this endeavor.

In the final phase of this project, my aim is to empower the younger generation with the freedom to choose their preferred method of menstruation. By introducing sustainable options early on, we can reduce the intimidation factor associated with making a switch later in life, once comfort has been established with a particular product. To kickstart this movement, conducting workshops and delivering impactful lectures in high schools would be an ideal waal way to instigate change.

Our vision is to cultivate a nurturing community, founded upon compassion and love.

We strive to create an environment where menstruators feel encouraged and supported in their pursuit of finding menstrual solutions that align with their needs and values. By fostering awareness and understanding, we aim to inspire people to embrace these sustainable options, recognizing the benefits they offer.

Together, we can build a community that supports menstruators, fostering a sense of comfort and confidence in their choices while contributing to a healthier planet and improved well-being.

Collaborating with skilled gynaecologists, we strive to offer comprehensive solutions and guide them through their transformative journey.

Exploring innovative products and recommending the most suitable options, supported by expert insights, while also providing valuable information on where to procure them. Additionally, sharing effective folding techniques for optimal utilization of menstrual cups.

Creating visually striking graphics that pack a powerful punch, designed to deeply resonate with individuals, effectively conveying the
significance of our message.

This project was done for the course Mapping Design whose goals were to:

Apply critical thinking & sensemaking through analysis, argumentation, communication, and research-based methodologies.

Understand and debate the structural internal and external systems at play in our communities and apply that intersectional thinking to the analysis and collection of information.
Adapt methods, behaviors, and perspectives to translate complexity, data, and concepts into compelling narratives and visualizations.

	Brief:
Identify a social issue, exploring its current state and reimaging its future. Once selected, complete this sentence

“How can we reimagine___________ to be more equitable and inclusive?”
	Final Deliverables:
A stakeholder mapA current state mapA map of your choice to help tell your story

We chose to explore the process of applying for rental unit as a freelancer in New York City.
The new york city rental market is known to be notoriously competetive and it also continues to underserve a large portion of the city’s population.
We wanted to take a look at how, being a freelancer in new york city, you’re denied access to a large part of the city. We collected the average rates of various freelancer jobs by looking at the freelancer websites like upwork, fiver and freelancer to undertand the average base rate of various jobs. We used an existing database that gave us access to understanding the rental rates around the city to calculate it’s affordability.

	an interactive map
that let’s the user experience what lifestyle they can afford with having different freelancing jobs. And the number of hours they’d need to put in to sustain it. The unaffordable areas light up in red and to nobody’s surprise most of Manhattan lit up red.

For our current state map, we took a look at the ardous ordeal a freelancer has to go through while applying to rent a unit in the city. All brokers require the following documents as a form of reasonable and good faith determination-
2 years of tax returns3 months of bank statementsLast two pay stubsCopy of your photo ID

The problem with this is that freelancers cannot provide the landlords with pay stubs since they don’t work the usual 9-5 jobs. If you do not pass the above criteria then you would need a guarantor that has a US credit history and is willing to cosign the apartment with you & take legal responsibility for it.

Our group wanted to depict this sisyphean process and chose a board game as the best way to illustrate this process.
The game is simple, you pick a Yes/No card every where the card symbol appears.
The more documentation you have, the better your chances are to go ahead. You roll a dice everytime you come across the dice icon to mimic how luck based it feels liketo submit applications to rent a unit.

For the last map, we wanted to understand the stakeholders present and the underlying system that causes this. As we built this map, we learnt what opposing forces play a part in keeping this inequitable system in place.

UX RESEARCH
VISUAL DESIGN21 OCT-16 DEC 2021

This project was done for a AI/ML company that provides customised AI/ML solutions & Network services geared towards automation of processes & systems in various industries.

Being the sole designer, I led the team with user research and wireframing stages for this project. The overall aim was to build a website for the company with a seamless user experience and user interface to convey the companys offerings efficiently through research and insights from stakeholders, directors, and developers.

Brief:TerraEdgeSoft needed to enhance its user experience to gain traction and attract more clients. This was a great opportunity to give the company a definitive visual design and establish trust. This project was high priority with different needs from various stakeholders and directors. Even though it was challenging to prioritize each individual and their needs, the outcome was successful in

Aim:Develop a user-friendly webflow to introduce the offerings of the company and allow clients to book a session.

Enhance the websites user experience and user interface to provide a more engaging experience.

Have the new website serve as a kickstart to the new visual design system for TerraEdgeSoft.

	DISCOVERY:
To further understand more and as a first step, I did individual and group interviews with various stakeholders and directors directly involved with this project. These individuals were from diverse departments within the company, such as Directors, Sales, Marketing, and Development. These interviews helped us to know individual needs and their expectations from this project.

Scalability: Design the platform to accommodate future enhancements and additions to the service offerings.

	Usability testing
For the usability testing, we gave specific tasks to each participant to understand their thinking of the website. We also did usability testing with the redesigned website for validating the design and assuring the user flow.

Findings
Design choices frustrate the users - font size, font color, white space, all caps and illegible fonts. For booking a call, a clear call to action is necessary.Users are also interested in secondary information such as previous case studies, etc to build trust.

Card sorting
We did card sorting with our participants to understand the information architecture of the current website. Card Sorting was exclusively for the navigation as there were many opportunities to improve the structure. This exercise also guided us in grouping content for the mega navigation during the redesign.

Findings
Most users thought that TerraEdgeSoft could remove many unnecessary contents within the mega navigation. There were also content that the users were not aware of and needed clarification.

Bright cobalt blue is the dominating color for the whole website as it evokes a sense of honesty and trust in the user’s mind. The primary buttons are blue so that they could stand out from the secondary buttons.Accesibility:
Contrast is the difference in brightness between any two elements. The Web Content Accesibility Guidelines (WCAG) set specific ratios that achieve the minimum required contrast for legibility. Generally speaking, small text is any size below 24px and requires a 4.5:1 contrast ratio. Large text is anything above 24px and requires a 3:1 contrast ratio.

	Fostering Farmer Wellbeing through Biodesign
BIODESIGN
1 OCT-4 NOV 2022
GENSPACE

Welcome to the Cocoa Farmer's Wellbeing Project, a collaborative initiative between Genspace, a community bio lab in Brooklyn, and Mars x Wrigley.
Our goal is to redefine the relationship between humans and the environment within the cocoa farming ecosystem. We believe that by nurturing the wellbeing of farmers and enhancing the health of the environment, we can pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.

	Brief:
Harmonizing Human and Environmental Wellbeing

What if the wellbeing of people and the environment were recognized as parts of the same whole? How might we create virtuous cycles where the wellbeing of people (physical, emotional, and social health) contributes to the wellbeing of the environment (increased biodiversity, richer soil, healthier air and water, and less pollution and waste). Imagine a future where food and our relationship with it brings people and the planet together.

	Nurturing Wellbeing Experiences for All
What if wellbeing was a collective project where people came together to nurture each other and improve each other’s health? What if the metrics for wellbeing were measured by people’s connection to each other and a thriving environment? Imagine a future where people’s diets didn’t just provide nutrition, but also fostered physical, mental, emotional, and social wellbeing.

The A solution for the prompt presented by Mars WrigleyA video describing our process

I was part of a 4 person group that represented Genspace- A community bio lab in Brooklyn.
After our prelimenary research we discovered that the beans account for 10% of weight 90% is the pod.
45 million tonnes of cacao pods are being produced every year. We decied to experiment with the cacao husks.
We tried to recover tanins from the husk that might be useful for a dyeing process but were only able to extract very little.

We then researched about the problems faced by the cacao farmers. Like any other plant, cacao is vulnerable to pests and diseases. One of the most damaging infections is witches’ broom, an aggressive fungus that can kill the tree and wipe out whole farms. In the 1980s, the disease devastated Brazil’s cacao production and it’s never far from producers’ minds.

We wanted to look for a solution that is cost effective, involved using cacao husks and combat the spread of this fungal disease.

After looking at more papers about this disease, we found that applying yeast might be beneficial for the plants since it grows faster and doesn’t let the fungus grow and infect the cacao pods. We tested this by innoculating yeast on different cacao husk extracts.

The yeast grew well best in the husk and sugar concentrate and were excited as to how this can help farmers save their fields.

The Important of InquiryI despised the idea of research being reduced to finding marketable solutions during my undergraduate degree. It felt disingenuous and superficial. Why couldn't I simply pursue knowledge and research to satiate my curiosity, without the pressure to turn complex problems into neatly packaged final deliverables?
And then, I came across the Ig Nobel awards. Prizes that celebrate research which is seemingly trivial or improbable, with the aim of "honoring achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think."

This approach cleverly flips the notion of research as a means to a predetermined end, instead emphasizing the inherent value of inquiry itself. Sometimes, the goal is simply to uncover the answers, rather than always building solutions. I found the Ig Nobel awards to be a delightful antidote to conclusion-driven research, and was inspired to illustrate some of the most entertaining ones I've come across. Going through them was an absolute riot, and I hope they bring you the same joy!︎

	HONORING NEW WAVE RAPPERS

ILLUSTRATIONPERSONAL PROJECT
MUSIC
Illustration series celebrating fiercely intelligent, new wave rappers that go unseen by mainstream media.

Hip hop is a traditionally male-dominated genre in which authenticity has frequently been identified with masculinity. This creates one of many barriers that female artists typically face when entering the hip hop world, leading to some experiencing hostility towards them for their sex and marginalization.
Along with sexist comments from their male contemporaries that gatekeeps this industry making it even more diffuclt for them to even to gain recognition from mainstream audience.
I wanted to create a series of illustrations of rappers that inspire me. From the neon-colored kookiness of Rico Nasty, to the visual creativity of Tierra Whack and Noname’s soothing near-spoken-word tunes, even Little Sims’s fierce jazz inflenced bars! This new class is bending the stereotypes of what it means to be free-thinking women in hip-hop, injecting a dose of progressive lyrics, non-binary sexuality and autonomous imagery into a genre that has been historically ruled by men.

	Little Simz, Venom
“They would never wanna admit I'm the best here. From the mere fact that I've got ovaries. It's a woman's world, so to speak.Pussy, you sourNever givin' credit where it's due 'cause you don't like pussy in power.”

	Noname, Song 33

“Oh, I have ambitions, dreamsBut dreams don't come cheap.I saw a demon on my shoulder, it's lookin' like patriarchy.Yo, but little did I know, all my reading would be a bother. It's trans women being murdered, and this is all he can offer?”Most female rappers choose to adopt the same braggadocio of their male counterparts in order to subvert expectations and push back against gender roles. Noname, however, opts to use prototypically feminine elements in the pursuit of her empowerment.

	Tierra Whack, My power
“Refer to me as a goddess, I'm tired of being modestA hundred degrees, the hottest, if we being honestEbony and ebonics, black people winThey say we bein' demonic, angel in disguiseI hate I have to disguise it, why you gotta despise it?Rich in the mind, that's why I'm making depositsCarry all the power, it's time to realize it”
Tierra has incredible flow to her music, she’s whacky and absurd. Her music is experimental, fun yet thought-provoking.

Rico Nasty, OHFR?
“I just think I'm eatin different more food for the mealNo more happy meals, just champagne cheersI used to not have fans, now I fill up fieldsBought a new house, but I need me a building (Damn)I can't stop until I'm making me a billionNo Aminé we reel inAny bitch who fishin' and seekin' out for attentionGeekin' in the mentions”

Female rappers have often used the stage provided by the genre to reclaim sexuality and portray sex in a way that puts women in control. Nicki Minaj is the current messiah of this gospel, and her confident, aggressive approach to sexuality has made her a feminist icon. But these rappers takes a different approach to the matter.
